We were delighted to announce back in 2011 that one of our volunteers Arthur Whiteway of Queens Avenue Wales, had been voted Rotherham Community Awards volunteer of the year. Receiving his award at a gala evening held at the Carlton Park hotel Rotherham in November of that year.
Arthur attended the evening with his wife Peggy and daughter Ann along with Steph Hyrschko of the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust. Steph said “We all had our fingers crossed and waited with baited breath for the result and when Arthurs name was read out as the winner we were all over the moon” Arthur really deserves this award. He has been an active resident of Kiveton Park all his life. Over the last few years his volunteering has been focused mainly around the Old Colliery Offices. But what is most remarkable about Arthur is that he is 84 years old and is a true example and inspiration to us all.
Arthur was unaware that he had been nominated until he received a letter from Voluntary Action Rotherham saying that he had made the final three. Arthur said it was a real surprise to find someone had nominated me and even more of a surprise to go on and win it.
Arthur now 96 is now enjoying a well earned retirement.
He really is an inspiration to all.
